Google Germany

Google continues to grow and expand. Level 6 represented the first opportunity to design and build an entire floor plate at the German headquarters. Almost 1700 m2 of office space. In typical Google style, the brief called for a stylised yet mature Hamburg theme.  "Level 6 - the streets" was envisioned as a homage to the street culture and ambiance of distinct neighbourhoods around the Schanze, St. Pauli and Reeperbahn areas.

5 distinct zones were developed, giving flavour and distinction to the large floor plate, whilst several material and graphic "rote faden" (connecting design features) tied the entire level together. Perforated acoustic plywood panels, corrugated steel sheeting, expanded metal mesh ceiling and carefully considered acoustic treatments form the main material palette. High quality furniture selections and lighting compliment all spaces.

The result is richly detailed, finely crafted work environment that pays special attention to collaboration spaces. Those random or controlled "street encounters" that happen in the office, can be the most productive sorts of meetings.

As the pièce de résistance, a mural was commissioned to bring life and fun to the largest and most central collaboration room. This mural, a hand-painted custom design by us embodied the spirit of the entire project by playing with "street cornering". The idea that meeting on the street for a chat and drink, as paralleled by meeting at the kitchen for an impromptu business discussion, can be the most productive and fruitful encounter in the office environment.
